How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Prepare bundles on sturdy pallets, platforms, or skids and secure with at least two metal bands per pallet. Use steel strapping and edge protectors so bands don’t bite into the aluminum.
- Document each pallet with piece count and typical lengths (e.g., 8–12 ft). Note NMFC 160005, Class 70 on the BOL to prevent reclass, and place labels on two adjacent sides for quick check-in.
- Block and brace ends with wood dunnage so cross arms can’t slide through. Add chocks or cribbing between tiers to stop rolling and keep bundles tight during forklift handling.
- Mind length limits for LTL—overlength arms may trigger accessorials. If the finish is sensitive, add stretch wrap or corrugated guards, but don’t replace the required metal bands.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 70 reduces quote time and limits reclass exposure on utility hardware.
- Proper banding and palletization cut handling time at terminals, lowering claim risk for bent or marred aluminum arms.
- Clear NMFC mapping (160005) speeds carrier acceptance and avoids back-and-forth on packaging sufficiency.
- Consolidated, banded pallets help utility contractors and co-ops stage jobsite material efficiently, improving crew readiness and reducing idle time.
