How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack items in inner polybags or small cartons, then master cartons with partitions to prevent scuffing and thread deformation on aluminum caps and pins.
- Add corrosion barriers (poly liners or VCI paper) and keep dissimilar metals separate to avoid staining during humid transit or outdoor staging.
- Palletize on 40×48 inches with no overhang; use edge protectors, two straps per axis, and full shrink wrap. Label by part number and count.
- For utility jobsites, kit per structure (e.g., 50 caps + 50 pins/carton) to speed field installs and reduce split shipments.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 rating simplifies pricing—no density calculations, fewer reclass risks, and faster LTL quotes.
- Predictable packaging in cartons reduces OS&D and claims, lowering replacement costs and avoiding crew downtime on line projects.
- Compact, packaged aluminum hardware cubes efficiently, improving trailer utilization and helping secure better freight rates.
- Non-hazardous status removes hazmat fees and paperwork, accelerating tendering and compliance for utility and contractor loads.
