How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Declare NMFC 160100 and Class 50 on the BOL so carriers rate wooden cross arms with attached braces/brackets/insulator pins correctly.
- Bundle arms tightly on skids with edge protectors; cap or orient insulator pins inward to prevent punctures during LTL handling.
- Use two to three steel or poly straps per bundle and block bundles lengthwise on pallets; avoid overhang for 8–12 ft lengths.
- If hardware protrudes, request non-stackable service and add clear labels; example: 20 arms per bundle, 10 bundles per pallet for yard delivery.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Low, fixed Class 50 keeps LTL rates competitive for bulky pole-line assemblies.
- Single, simple NMFC eliminates density disputes and reduces costly reclass/inspection fees.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and speeds tendering and pickups.
- Standardized bundling minimizes damage to pins and brackets, cutting OS&D claims and project delays.
