How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Match packaging to form factor: bundle rigid HDPE/steel U-channels with spacers on a long skid; coil spiral wrap protectors in poly bags inside double-wall cartons.
- For 8–10 ft lengths, use custom pallets the full length of the pieces, cap both ends, and apply edge guards under bands to prevent crush and puncture claims.
- Keep metal guards and polymer parts separated; bag small clamps and bolts as kits per pole location, and label each bundle by length and wire size for quick yard staging.
- State piece count, longest length, and material type on the BOL; note “NMFC 160310, nonhazardous.” Photograph packaged bundles before pickup to support OS&D resolution.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate quotes and fewer reclass charges by referencing NMFC 160310 on tenders and BOLs, minimizing surprise inspections and billing disputes.
- Lower damage risk through proper bundling and edge protection, reducing replacement costs and avoiding jobsite delays for line construction crews.
- Optimized LTL spend by building bundles under common overlength thresholds (96–108 in) and consolidating coils to avoid additional handling fees.
- Faster field deployment with clearly labeled kits by wire size and application, improving crew productivity and shortening outage or build windows.
