How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. List the item on the BOL as “steel pots for magnesium melting—NMFC 161300, Class 70,” and note that all pots are empty, cleaned, and dry.
  2. Select packaging by weight and geometry: palletize single pots with banding and edge protectors, or fully crate larger, round-bottom designs to shield rims and pour spouts.
  3. Stabilize the center of gravity with blocking/cribbing; keep forklift openings clear and use at least two steel bands around the pot and pallet deck.
  4. For used foundry pots, remove slag and dust, cap sharp lugs, and include a “no magnesium residue” statement to prevent hazmat misclassification at pickup.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable costs: fixed Class 70 with no density rules speeds quoting and reduces reclass risk across LTL carriers.
  • Lower claims: rugged steel plus proper crating protects rims, spouts, and lugs, minimizing repair downtime and replacement costs.
  • Operational efficiency: easy NMFC mapping in TMS, faster tendering, and fewer exception holds for industrial shipments to foundries or die-casting shops.
  • Wider carrier access: non-hazardous status avoids hazmat fees and expands routing options for time-sensitive moves.
