How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack stamps flat in rigid mailers or binders placed within corrugated cartons; add glassine or poly liners to protect gum-side and prevent moisture.
- Bundle mint sheets, coils, and booklets by SKU. Avoid banding directly on perforations; use chipboard top and bottom, edge guards, then shrink-wrap and cartonize or palletize.
- Label the BOL and cartons: “Postage Stamps – NMFC 161895, Class 0, Non-Hazardous.” Request dry vans and avoid high-heat or damp trailers.
- Segregate from liquids, strong odors, and heavy crush-prone freight. Apply “Do Not Bend” labels, use corner posts, and record carton counts with tamper-evident seals.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Single fixed classification minimizes reclass fees and quote disputes, giving predictable LTL pricing.
- Class 0 rating can reduce cost per hundredweight compared with mixed printed matter shipments.
- Non-hazardous paper goods speed carrier acceptance and typically avoid special handling surcharges.
- Standardized documentation and protective packaging reduce claim risk, preserving face value inventory and customer trust.
