Note 162541: NOTE-Packages weighing 300 pounds or more must be in wooden boxes or on skids completely enclosed by a wooden body.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Calculate density per Item 170: weigh the boxed/crated goods and divide by the outer cubic feet. Enter this to select the correct class within 50–400.
  2. Package by commodity: use edge guards and dividers for printing plates; box type and slugs in double‑wall cartons; block and brace lithographic stones to prevent shifting.
  3. When shipping direct-image or photo-offset plates, you may unitize on skids (see Note, item 162541). Band stacks, add a rigid top sheet, and stretch-wrap tight to preserve cube.
  4. For cabinets, case racks, and benches (no cast-iron tops), crate securely, remove or secure drawers, and mark center-of-gravity. For roller composition in boxes or drums, keep closures tight and upright, palletize if over 150 lb.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Density-rated classes let dense items (lead type, stones, metal plates) land lower freight classes, reducing LTL rates without changing NMFC numbers.
  • One article covers diverse printshop goods—fewer NMFC lookups, cleaner BOLs, and lower risk of reweigh/reclass charges.
  • Commodity-appropriate packing (crates for furniture, protected cartons for plates) cuts damage risk and claim exposure on sharp, heavy, or brittle items.
  • Clear notes like “plates on skids per item 162541” and accurate density speed inspections, minimize exceptions, and keep transit times predictable.
