How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Document inert status and exclude propellant; attach a letter of inertness or specification sheet if the carrier requests proof.
- Cap threaded ports and protect fins or sharp edges with foam-in-place or closed-cell padding; bag small fasteners and sensors separately.
- Choose rigid packaging: plywood crates or ATA cases with blocking and bracing; for electronics, use ESD-safe bags and anti-static foam.
- For tubes, casings, or rails, bundle with spacers and strap to a skid without overhang; add This Side Up and Do Not Stack labels.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat fees and broadens carrier options, reducing per-shipment cost.
- Precise NOI descriptions (materials, packaging, inertness) minimize reclass, reweighs, and surprise rate changes.
- Robust crating protects precision housings and fins, cutting damage claims and schedule slips in aerospace builds.
- Detailed specs speed quoting when no fixed class exists, improving planning accuracy and procurement timelines.
