How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use rigid packaging—heavy-wall tubes or triangular cartons—with capped ends, corner guards, and internal foam to prevent bending of long poles.
- For telescoping designs, nest sections and strap them inside the package; bag bolts and brackets and secure them to the shaft to avoid box punctures.
- Measure the full length including end caps and fittings, and note carrier overlength thresholds when requesting LTL quotes.
- Label clearly with “Do Not Bend” and place scannable barcodes on a side panel so automated conveyors can read long parcels.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 simplifies rating and speeds quoting for packaged clothesline supports.
- Packaging requirement aligns with NMFC expectations, helping avoid reclass fees and inspections.
- Nesting sections to reduce overall length can cut overlength accessorials without changing the freight class.
- Reinforced end protection lowers damage claims on slender metal or wood props, boosting margins and customer satisfaction.
