How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- On the BOL, spell it out: 'Edge Protectors, fiberboard or synthetic, NMFC 162845, Class 55 — nested, banded to pallets; quantity of pallets and bundles.'
- Confirm material and construction: non‑corrugated fiberboard or chemically hardened synthetic fiber only. If corrugated, use the correct NMFC for corrugated profiles.
- Unitize tightly: nest profiles to reduce cube, band with two or more straps per bundle, add stretch wrap, and use strap guards so tension doesn’t crush thin edges. Keep everything within the pallet footprint.
- Protect against moisture and top load. Use poly sheeting for fiberboard, add corner posts or dunnage, and request 'no top stack' when profiles are easily crushed.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 55 simplifies quoting and prevents density reclass—predictable LTL rates for repeat shipments.
- Nesting and banding reduce cubic footprint, improving trailer utilization and lowering cost per unit shipped.
- Clear NMFC identification on paperwork reduces inspection delays, chargebacks, and claim disputes.
- Nonhazardous status streamlines carrier acceptance and widens carrier options across standard LTL networks.
