Note 163662: NOTE-Kits may also contain higher classed articles provided the weight of such articles does not exceed 15 percent of the weight upon which freight charges are assessed.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Verify kit contents align with Note 163662: soldiers’ rations, drinking water, and only articles rated at or below Class 85 to keep the classification valid.
  2. Pack in rigid corrugated boxes with inner liners or sealed poly to contain moisture; secure water bottles or pouches with dividers to prevent chafing and leaks.
  3. Mark each box with “Emergency Kits—Air Crew,” piece count, gross weight, and expiration or lot codes for rations and water to streamline base receiving and rotation.
  4. Palletize on 48x40 wood pallets, strap and stretch-wrap, add “This Side Up” arrows, and avoid co-loading with hazmat to prevent accessorials and delays.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 85 rating simplifies quoting and eliminates density disputes, giving predictable LTL costs for routine training or deployment replenishments.
  • Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat fees and carrier restrictions, widening carrier choices and accelerating tendering in time-sensitive movements.
  • Boxed packaging reduces OS&D exposure and speeds count-by-case at military warehouses, improving inventory accuracy and compliance on GOV/MIL contracts.
  • Consolidating kits into master cartons and full pallets lowers handling, reduces reweigh/reclass risk, and helps secure better per-unit freight rates.
