How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Use sturdy corrugated boxes with tight seals and inner dividers to prevent burst bags or crushed bars; mark cartons as Food – Non-Perishable with lot and date codes.
  2. Palletize on 40x48 food-grade pallets, avoid overhang, and wrap from base to top with corner protection; apply ‘Do Not Double Stack’ only if carton crush strength is limited.
  3. Reference NMFC 163720, Class 70 on the BOL and list case counts by SKU/lot for precise receiving and traceability in government or institutional deliveries.
  4. Keep loads dry and odor-free: use pallet covers in damp warehouses, separate from chemicals, and cap the top layer to shield rations from dust during cross-dock transfers.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable pricing: fixed Class 70 means no density calculation, enabling fast, apples-to-apples LTL quotes and tighter budgeting.
  • Lower risk and fewer fees: non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and expands carrier options for nationwide distribution.
  • Better handling outcomes: standardized boxed packaging fits LTL networks, reducing exceptions, OS&D claims, and dwell time at terminals.
  • Audit-ready compliance: alignment with Quartermasters’ Stores classification supports government, NGO, and institutional procurement requirements.
