NMFC Description Class
163900.00 RACKS GROUP:

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Specify the rack type and material (steel uprights, wire decking, wood display frames) and whether units ship knocked down or assembled.
  2. Pack long rails and beams in tight bundles with dunnage, cap the ends, and band to a 48x40 pallet to prevent spear-like protrusions.
  3. For assembled sections, crate or fully enclose with corner posts and heavy corrugate; keep dimensions within your carrier’s LTL limits.
  4. Label clearly: “Racks—KD—steel—3 bundles, 1 pallet,” include piece counts and photos so carriers can price quickly and avoid reclass.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Knock-down packing reduces cube and accessorials, lowering LTL rates and avoiding oversize charges.
  • Proper bundling and edge protection cut finish damage and claims, saving replacement cost and labor time.
  • Consistent descriptions and documentation speed quoting and reduce reweigh/reclass surprises at terminals.
  • Non-hazardous status expands carrier options, improving service choices and transit reliability.
