How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm construction and finish (steel, aluminum, plastic, powder-coated) and wrap sharp edges and coated surfaces to prevent scuffs during LTL handling.
- Choose packing by strength: single units boxed with foam or honeycomb pads; multi-packs nested with slip sheets; heavy-gauge steel guards crated and braced.
- Palletize with faces vertical, no overhang, corner boards and two bands; add ‘Do Not Stack’ if perforated mesh or louvers can crush.
- Declare NMFC 164810 and select the proper class within 85–150 based on packaging and protection level; list piece count and any hardware bags and photograph the pack-out.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate classing prevents reclass fees and unexpected invoice adjustments on radiator guard shipments.
- Upgrading to crates for heavy or long guards reduces transit damage and claim risk, protecting margins.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines paperwork and speeds tenders across most LTL networks.
- Optimized pack density (e.g., nested sets per carton on standard 48×40 pallets) can unlock better tiered freight rates.
