How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select NMFC 165105, Class 50 on your BOL; no density needed, but include actual weight and dimensions for pricing and capacity planning.
- Package iron/steel adapters in sturdy cartons or wood crates with foam or corrugated blocking; protect machined faces with caps and VCI wrap to prevent rust.
- Unitize on a pallet: keep center of gravity low, band each package to the pallet, and add edge protectors so metal edges don’t cut straps.
- Mark each package “Adapter, railway car truck, steel” and show piece count; avoid loose items and allow fork or pallet jack access on all sides.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 50 reduces reclass charges and shortens quote cycles—carriers know exactly what they’re moving.
- Class 50 often yields better LTL rates than higher classes, lowering shipping costs for railcar OEMs and MRO teams.
- Proper packaged parts see fewer OS&D claims, cutting replacement spend and downtime on track maintenance projects.
- Standardized labeling and packaging across suppliers streamlines inbound receiving at depots and improves inventory accuracy.
