How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State the commodity exactly on the BOL: "Angle Bars or Plates, railway track, iron or steel – NMFC 165110, Class 50" to prevent reclass.
- Bundle tightly with steel strapping and edge protectors; place on a solid skid or wood runners with no overhang and at least three strap points per bundle.
- Keep the center of gravity low and block/brace the bundle; for 6–10 ft pieces, use cradle dunnage to stop rolling and allow safe forklift tines to enter.
- Cap sharp corners, stretch-wrap to contain loose scale, and label "Do Not Stack" if plate thickness or angles could deform under top load.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 50 means no density calculations, reducing inspections and reclass fees for heavy steel track hardware.
- Low freight class on dense iron/steel components delivers competitive LTL rates and predictable cost per pound.
- Simple, consistent coding accelerates quoting and procurement for rail maintenance, construction, and MRO projects.
- Single classification across angle bars and plates streamlines consolidations with other track parts and simplifies claims documentation.
