How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use the BOL description “Axles, railway car or locomotive” and reference NMFC 165170. Note Class N/A and provide piece count, material (steel/forged), and new vs. used.
- Cradle each axle on hardwood skids with V‑blocks or chocks, then steel‑band to the skid. Cap journal ends, shrink‑wrap for cleanliness, and add VCI wrap if rust is a concern.
- Publish exact unit weights, overall length, and skid footprint for quoting. Mark center of gravity and provide 3.5–4 in dunnage clearance so forklifts can lift safely.
- For long or heavy pairs, consolidate into banded bundles on one skid. If length exceeds standard LTL limits or weight is extreme, choose flatbed or partial truckload and request blocking/strapping.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate naming under NMFC 165170 reduces reclass fees and dispute cycles when carriers audit heavy steel components.
- Proper cradling and banding slash damage claims on machined journals, keeping rail MRO timelines intact and avoiding costly rebuild delays.
- Bundling multiple axles on a single skid lowers handling charges and improves load density, often yielding better LTL rates.
- Clear specs (weights, lengths, skid size) speed up carrier quotes and appointment scheduling, shortening lead times for depot and fleet maintenance.
