How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Print NMFC 165210 and Class 77.5 on the BOL; this item is not density-based, so your class won’t change with packaging or cube.
- Palletize or crate the spreader, then block and brace: secure gates/deflectors, cap protrusions, and add edge protection. Mark center of gravity and forklift points.
- Provide exact piece count, overall dimensions, and weight for capacity planning. If the unit exceeds standard LTL height or has wheel sets, request volume LTL or flatbed.
- Use heavy-duty strapping over the frame (not controls), add drip trays if recently serviced, and include clear photos to speed carrier inspections and avoid reclass.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating: Fixed Class 77.5 streamlines quoting and prevents density audits that can cause surprise charges.
- Wider carrier access: Non-hazardous status reduces special handling requirements and helps secure competitive LTL rates.
- Operational simplicity: One classification for ballast spreaders allows clean TMS/ERP mapping and fewer BOL corrections.
- Lower risk costs: Proper blocking, bracing, and protection around gates and blades reduces damage claims and rework delays.
