How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack concrete battery boxes, chutes, vaults, or wells in heavy-duty boxes with internal blocking so pieces cannot shift; add foam or wood spacers to protect edges and conduit knockouts.
- Place boxed units on skids or runners to allow forklift tines and keep weight centered; for a 36–48 in vault lid, add 4x4 runners and steel banding around the box.
- Mark each box with actual weight, center-of-gravity arrows, and the item description (e.g., “Concrete Battery Vault—Non-Hazardous”) to streamline terminal handling.
- Group small chutes or well sections on one palletized box with dividers; keep footprint within pallet to avoid overhang charges and reduce damage risk in LTL.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate NMFC alignment for concrete battery enclosures reduces reclass fees and inspection delays.
- Boxed, blocked packaging lowers chip and crack damage, cutting claim costs and reshipments.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and can improve LTL rates and transit flexibility.
- Standardized box-and-skid prep speeds dock turns on rail and transit projects, limiting detention and accessorials.
