How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Bundle iron or steel pieces with tight steel banding and edge protectors; keep lengths uniform and mark center of gravity for safe forklift handling.
- If palletizing, strap bundles to a 48x40 pallet with blocking to prevent roll; avoid overhang to stay within LTL handling guidelines.
- Label each bundle with NMFC 165340, Class 60, piece count, and metal type; mirror this on the BOL to prevent reclass or inspection delays.
- Use dunnage between layers and V-boards on corners to protect flanges and pre-drilled holes on brake steps during transit and cross-dock moves.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable quotes with a fixed Class 60 rating—no density formulas, easier budgeting for repair shops and rail equipment OEMs.
- Lower risk of reclass fees when bundles are properly banded and documented with the correct NMFC number and class.
- Stronger damage control: edge-protected, uniform bundles reduce OS&D claims and keep railcar maintenance schedules on track.
- Faster dock turns and storage efficiency since bundles are forklift-friendly and simpler to count and stage.
