How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Bundle beams with steel banding and edge protectors; secure to pallets or skids so hanger lugs and ends can’t shift during LTL handling.
- Use blocking and dunnage to keep round or awkward profiles from rolling; add shrink or stretch wrap only after strapping to maintain lift points.
- Mark the BOL: “Brake Beams, railway car or locomotive – NMFC 165510 – Class 50”; note piece count, pallet count, and whether items are crated or banded bundles.
- Protect sharp corners with caps and guard protrusions to avoid damaging adjacent freight; keep oily or greased components separated and bagged.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 50—no density calculations, fewer reclass surprises, and faster quoting.
- Lower cost per pound than higher classes for heavy steel parts, especially when shipping bundled or palletized beams.
- Non-hazardous status reduces special handling fees and simplifies carrier selection and documentation.
- Proper bundling and palletizing cuts claim risk, shortens loading time, and improves carrier acceptance for tight pickup windows.
