How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select NMFC 165530 for air, electric, or steam railway brake assemblies and components; avoid using automotive brake items to prevent reclassification.
- Mount heavy valves and steam cylinders on sturdy skids with through-bolts or steel banding. Cap all ports, use VCI wrap, and add moisture barrier film to curb corrosion.
- Protect electric brake controllers with anti-static wrap and dense foam blocking. Mark orientation, note top-heavy crates, and keep magnets or strong EM sources away.
- Spell out on the BOL: “Railway brake equipment—air/electric/steam, NOI, NMFC 165530, Class 77.5.” Include part numbers and crate counts, and schedule liftgate or forklift as needed.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: a fixed Class 77.5 simplifies LTL quoting and budgeting for maintenance programs.
- Non-hazmat status cuts paperwork and avoids hazmat fees, accelerating dock turn times.
- Broad NOI coverage reduces rating disputes by grouping air, electric, and steam brake components under one item.
- Damage prevention guidance lowers claims and rework costs, keeping railcar overhauls and fleet uptime on schedule.
