How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the commodity exactly on the BOL: “Carlines, single, railway car or locomotive — NMFC 165770, Class 50.” Include piece count and longest length.
- Unitize wisely: band the single carline to a rigid skid, cap or pad sharp ends, and add edge guards. Mark handling notes like “Do not fork from ends.”
- Quote at fixed Class 50; skip density calculators. Verify carrier overlength triggers (e.g., 96–120 in) and request overlength handling if needed.
- Tag each piece with PO and job number for the railcar or locomotive work order to speed receiving in rail shops and maintenance facilities.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 50 pricing streamlines LTL rate shopping and reduces reclass penalties.
- No density or packaging-based class shifts means faster tenders and fewer billing disputes.
- Accurate NMFC usage aligns with rail MRO workflows, improving dock throughput and parts traceability.
- Proper securement guidance lowers damage risk for heavy steel shapes, cutting claims and downtime.
