How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use rugged containers—steel bins or wood crates—with blocking so knuckles don’t strike and chip; add VCI paper or light oil to curb rust.
- Palletize low and tight: steel banding with edge protectors, no overhang, and mark Heavy plus center-of-gravity for safer forklift handling.
- Document precisely: list NMFC 166070, Class 50, piece count, and total weight on the BOL; note non-hazardous forged/cast steel; request liftgate if no dock.
- Plan shop and yard handling: verify forklift capacity, keep lots by part number or heat code, and cap stack height to prevent shifting in transit.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 50 on dense steel typically lowers $/lb, reducing LTL costs for railcar overhaul, locomotive rebuilds, and OEM supply runs.
- Fixed class simplifies quoting and avoids density-based reclass fees, cutting surprises on invoices and speeding procurement approvals.
- Tough metal plus proper blocking reduces damage claims and downtime—key for keeping maintenance windows on schedule.
- Standardized bins/crates make cross-docking and consolidations faster, improving dock turns, labor efficiency, and intermodal compatibility.
