How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm each box or package weighs at least 25 lb; if a single lid runs light, combine two lids or include pins in the same box to meet the threshold.
- Pack in heavy-duty cartons with blocking and dunnage so steel edges and any pins cannot punch through; for example, two 18 lb lids banded together in one box exceed the minimum.
- Print the gross weight per package on labels and note “Steel Railway Journal Box Covers” to speed dock checks and prevent reweigh disputes.
- Stage boxes on pallets for LTL pickup, keeping the heaviest cartons low, then stretch-wrap and band; mark the BOL with NMFC 166120, Class 50, non-hazardous.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 50 yields competitive LTL rates for dense steel parts, cutting cost per pound on maintenance and rebuild programs.
- Weight-based classification removes density math and dims, enabling faster quotes and fewer reclass claims.
- Packaging at or above 25 lb per package keeps you compliant and avoids surprise fees for nonconforming shipments.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and streamlines paperwork, improving transit reliability for railway MRO supply chains.
