How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List on the BOL as: “Crossing, railway track, iron or steel — NMFC 166250 — Class 50” to prevent reclass or inspection delays.
- Bundle the crossing on a heavy-duty skid with hardwood blocking; use steel banding with edge protectors to shield machined noses and flangeways.
- Share exact length, width, height, piece count, and total weight with the carrier; request forklift or crane handling since liftgates rarely suit this weight.
- Keep skids compact (ideally within 96 x 48 in.) to avoid linear-foot rules; if oversized or over 3,000 lb, quote a flatbed option for safer securement.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 50 delivers favorable base rates for dense steel trackwork, improving LTL cost-per-pound versus lighter classifications.
- Simple, non-density classification speeds quoting and cuts audit risk, reducing reclass fees and surprise adjustments.
- Consistent bundling on pallets lowers handling time and damage claims, improving on-time performance and OS&D outcomes.
- Accurate NMFC and clear descriptions streamline carrier acceptance at terminals and rail-served facilities, reducing dwell.
