Notes
Note 166421: NOTE-Includes doors securely fastened on shipping carriers or racks designed to transport the product as a unit in a diagonal position.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Note if you’re shipping door leaves only or full assemblies with tracks, rollers, and latches; list each component on the BOL to reflect NOI accuracy.
- Crate doors flat or on edge with rigid bracing, edge protectors, and blocking; use oversize skids longer than the door to prevent tip and fork damage.
- Provide piece count, max length, width, height, and weight per crate; flag lengths over 96 inches to plan for overlength fees and carrier capability.
- Seal or bag lubricated hardware, cap sharp projections, and wrap steel with corrosion protection; mark Do Not Stack and Center of Gravity for safe handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Precise NOI description reduces reclass/reweigh disputes and keeps LTL quotes predictable for railcar component moves.
- Engineered crating limits edge, hinge, and locking-surface damage, cutting claim costs and downtime for railcar maintenance schedules.
- Bundling multiple doors in one reinforced crate improves cube efficiency and lowers accessorials on long freight.
- Selecting carriers experienced with long, heavy parts avoids surprise overlength surcharges and shortens transit and dock times.
