How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Secure wheelsets and stabilize the low center of gravity: chock, block, and band the iron truck to a reinforced skid (e.g., a 6,000 lb car on a 96"x144" hardwood base).
- Remove detachable decks, refractory tiles, or fixtures and ship separately to keep listing under iron NOI; document condition with photos before stretch wrap.
- Pick the right mode: crate for LTL if under 8 ft high; use flatbed or step-deck for oversized frames, and lift via rated lugs or spreader bar to avoid bending.
- List specifics on the BOL: “Dry kiln car/truck, iron, NOI,” include exact dimensions, weight, wheel-locking method, and loading diagram; get carrier pre-approval for non-palletized units.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Reduce reclass risk by clearly stating iron construction and NOI status, improving rating accuracy and speeding up quotes.
- Lower claim exposure with proper wheel locking, cribbing, and banding—keeps refurbishment schedules on track for mills and ceramics plants.
- Optimize cost by mode-matching: consolidate for volume LTL when cubic fit allows, or shift to partial flatbed when footprint drives LTL premiums.
- Bundle multiple kiln trucks on a single engineered skid to cut handling touches, accessorials, and minimum charges per unit moved.
