How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Protect machined surfaces and bores with VCI wrap, rust inhibitor, and end caps; note any heat-treated or precision-ground areas on the BOL.
- Mount each equalizer on a sturdy skid, lag-bolt through cleats, and secure with steel banding. Add hardwood blocking or chocks to stop rolling or shifting.
- Bundle multiple bars with spacers to avoid metal-on-metal contact, then crate or palletize. Mark center of gravity and lift points for safe forklift handling.
- On the BOL, write: “Equalizers, locomotive – NMFC 166610, Class 70, non-hazardous,” plus piece count, packaging type, longest piece length, and total weight for accurate rating.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs: Fixed Class 70 rating helps avoid density reclass and surprise billing adjustments.
- Fewer accessorials: Proper bundling and keeping lengths under common overlength thresholds reduces carrier surcharges and improves LTL options.
- Lower risk, fewer claims: Blocking, banding, and surface protection safeguard high-value suspension components during transit.
- Simplified compliance: Non-hazardous status streamlines carrier acceptance and speeds quoting for rail OEMs, rebuilders, and transit fleets.
