How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the parts are steel railcar floors or sills, then list part numbers and drawings on paperwork and mark NMFC 166710, Class 50 on the BOL.
- Bundle long steel members with banding and edge guards on hardwood skids; block and brace to stop rolling or sliding, and mark lift points and center of gravity.
- Limit rust and scuffs: use VCI wrap or oil paper for bare steel, cap sharp ends, and keep bundles within pallet footprints to avoid overhang fees.
- Quote accurately: note any pieces over 96 inches or heavy lifts, choose carriers that accept long freight, and schedule dock times for cranes or spreader bars.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs: fixed Class 50 helps avoid reclass and reweigh charges, improving LTL rate accuracy.
- Clear NMFC identification speeds receiving at railcar shops and fabricators, reducing dwell and handling time.
- Lower claim risk through proper bundling and blocking, protecting precision-formed sills and floor assemblies.
- Non-hazardous designation broadens carrier options and shortens compliance checks for faster tendering.
