How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Declare NMFC 166730 and Class 50 on the BOL to prevent reclass and keep rates aligned with dense iron/steel hardware.
- Package guards in tight bundles with steel banding and edge protectors, or palletize with blocking so pieces cannot slide during LTL handling.
- Use hardwood dunnage between stacked layers and keep the bundle footprint within pallet edges; mark total weight and center of gravity for forklifts.
- If shipping loose lengths or odd shapes, cradle in V-blocks or angle racks and shrink-wrap to contain sharp edges common to machined steel parts.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Single Class 50 rating simplifies quoting and reduces reclass risk for heavy, dense rail components.
- Predictable costs for MRO programs and track projects since density and dimensions do not change the class.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and eases carrier acceptance in mixed LTL networks.
- Proper bundling/palletizing minimizes damage claims on machined edges, preserving project timelines and installation quality.
