How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Show NMFC 166870 and “Guard Rail Clamps, iron or steel — Class 50” on the BOL to lock in the correct rating and avoid density-based reclass.
- Bundle clamps tightly in nested stacks, then palletize 48x40 with steel or heavy poly strapping and edge protectors to stop movement and protect contact surfaces.
- Distribute weight evenly on the pallet, keep nothing overhanging, and use blocking/dunnage in crates or pallet boxes so small pieces cannot escape in transit.
- Label two sides of each pallet: item name, NMFC 166870, Class 50, piece count. Example: four banded bundles per pallet for faster dock handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing from a fixed Class 50 rating reduces invoice surprises and shortens quoting cycles.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and minimizes paperwork, accelerating pickup and delivery windows.
- No density rules mean simpler bids for heavy metal hardware and less risk of reclass fees on reweigh.
- Proper palletization for clamp bundles cuts handload charges and lowers damage claims for rugged rail components.
