How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Band blocks into tight, uniform bundles with edge protectors, then place on pallets so forklifts can lift cleanly and bundles don’t shift.
- List on the BOL as “Rail Filler Blocks, wooden, in bundles – NMFC 167370, Class 60, non-hazardous” to prevent reclass or inspection delays.
- Trim or tuck strap tails and avoid protruding fasteners; keep bundle ends flush to stack safely against other railway materials.
- Keep product dry and segregate from creosote-treated timbers; moisture and cross-contamination can invite rewraps or damage claims.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 60 simplifies quoting and often yields better LTL rates than mixed wood assortments.
- Bundled configuration speeds loading and reduces touch points, lowering handling charges and claim risk.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat fees and streamlines carrier acceptance across rail supply lanes.
- Simple, non-density classification cuts admin time and minimizes reclass disputes and unexpected charges.
