How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Specify the seat build before tendering—assembled double seats, flip-up units, or component kits (shells, cushions, armrests)—and list counts per pallet, crate, or returnable rack.
- For palletized seats, bag the upholstery, turn fabrics inward, add edge boards, and cap exposed mounting studs to prevent punctures and abrasion in LTL handling.
- If shipping in OEM returnable racks, note rack dimensions, stackability, and tie-down points; many carriers offer better rates when racks speed loading and reduce touches.
- Without a published class range, include materials, photos, exact dims, and weights so carriers can rate by exception or FAK; e.g., 4 twin seats per rack at 750 lb total.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Prevent reclass fees by declaring packaging style and materials upfront, improving quote accuracy and avoiding surprise accessorials.
- Minimize damage claims with bagging, edge protection, and stud caps—protecting upholstery and trim on refurbishment or new-build projects.
- Increase cube efficiency using stackable racks or tight pallet patterns, cutting line-hauls and driving lower cost per installed seat.
- Cleaner counts and labeling accelerate receiving and installation, reducing detention, handling time, and project downtime for rail fleets.
