How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack each steel slack adjuster with thread/clevis protection, add rust-inhibitor bags, and place in inner cartons or molded trays before a sturdy master carton.
- Palletize cartons on 48×40 pallets, interlock stack, use edge protectors, then band and shrink-wrap; keep weight low and centered to prevent tip and crush.
- Label cartons with part numbers and “Slack Adjusters – steel,” and list NMFC 167770, Class 70 on the BOL to prevent reweigh/reclass fees.
- Tender as LTL packages only—no loose pieces or bundles; note delivery constraints for rail shops or yards and confirm non-hazmat status.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 delivers predictable LTL pricing and faster quotes across lanes.
- Non-hazardous classification avoids hazmat paperwork and surcharges, accelerating tender-to-pickup.
- Damage control on dense steel parts lowers claims and keeps railcar MRO schedules on track.
- Uniform, stackable packaging improves dock efficiency and can reduce handling and accessorial costs.
