How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Package as solid steel rings on blocked pallets or in steel racks; band through the bore with edge protectors to stop rolling and abrasion.
- List “Steel wheel tires” on the BOL with NMFC 168140 and Class 50; include ring count, diameter, and total weight for accurate rating and handling.
- Distribute weight low and centered; usually 2–4 rings per skid, limited height, anti-slip mats, and chocks to prevent lateral movement in transit.
- Guard against moisture and staining: light oil or VCI wrap, plus stretch wrap over labels; avoid loose singles—bundle or crate for forklift-safe handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 50 yields favorable base rates for dense steel, cutting LTL spend on routine shipments to wheel shops and MRO facilities.
- Simple, fixed classification reduces reclass exposure and billing disputes—no density calculations or dimensional qualifiers to trigger surprises.
- Rugged commodity tolerates tight consolidation (multiple rings per skid), improving cost per unit while maintaining claim resilience.
- Clear NMFC mapping streamlines procurement and ERP item masters, accelerating quote-to-booking cycles and carrier compliance.
