How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Reference NMFC 168220 and Class 50 on the BOL for iron or steel railway wedges/turnouts; density isn’t needed, but include accurate piece counts and weights.
- Bundle wedges on 4x4 dunnage with edge protectors; apply two or more steel bands per bundle and leave 4 in forklift pockets for safe terminal handling.
- For turnout components with points and frogs, cap sharp ends, block and brace inside a crate or heavy skid, and separate loose hardware in labeled boxes.
- Prevent corrosion and scuffing: wrap contact surfaces with VCI paper or plastic, then stretch-wrap; keep bundles under 60 in height to avoid special handling fees.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 50 simple rating keeps quotes predictable and often lower for dense steel track parts compared with density-based classes.
- Non-density classification reduces reweigh/reclass exposure and speeds tendering, cutting administrative delays and potential fees.
- Proper bundling and skidding accelerate cross-dock flow, lowering handling time and damage risk, which translates to fewer claims and returns.
- Clear NMFC 168220 labeling helps carriers plan forklifts with longer forks and appropriate staging, minimizing special handling accessorials.
