How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Choose heavy-duty cartons (44 ECT or 275# burst) and size them so wheels cannot roll; add corrugated cradles or foam blocks to lock hubs in place.
- Guard sharp rims and flanges with edge protectors, and wrap bearings in VCI paper or poly bags to prevent rust and contain grease.
- Distribute weight evenly—pack singles or matched pairs per box with dividers so metal faces don’t grind; mark Team Lift on boxes over 50 lb.
- Tender as boxed freight at Class 85 under NMFC 168260; keep cartons upright and, if unitizing, secure boxes to a pallet with stretch wrap and corner boards.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable LTL pricing at Class 85—no density calculation needed, speeding quotes and preventing reclass charges.
- Non-hazardous status reduces paperwork and avoids hazmat surcharges for maintenance and MRO shipments.
- Boxed specification aligns with carrier handling, improving stackability and lowering damage claims on heavy steel components.
- Clear Railway Group alignment streamlines procurement and inventory control for rail shops and trolley maintenance programs.
