How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify they are non‑motorized railcar or locomotive trucks and note the rail equipment model; list if wheelsets, brake rigging, or side frames are included.
- Mount each truck on heavy skids or a welded steel rack, chock wheels, add cribbing, and secure with steel banding and edge protectors; tag each piece for identification.
- Mark center of gravity and lift points, and state the exact weight per piece on the BOL; advise if a crane or high‑capacity forklift is required (e.g., two 16,000‑lb locomotive trucks on a step‑deck).
- For LTL or enclosed van moves, request blocking and bracing in the trailer and prevent any free‑rolling components; reference “trucks, railway, without motors” on paperwork to align with NMFC 168420.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate NMFC usage reduces reclass and reweigh disputes, leading to cleaner invoices and fewer accessorials.
- Non‑hazardous status simplifies routing and documentation, enabling faster tendering across multiple carriers.
- Purpose‑built racks and proper banding lower damage risk to high‑value bogies, protecting uptime for rail operations.
- Clear specs (piece count, dimensions, weight) help select the most economical mode—heavy LTL for one bogie or partial flatbed/step‑deck for pairs—improving freight rates.
