How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Write the BOL as: “Ramie Filasse or Sliver — NMFC 168700 — Class 100,” and list counts by package type (bags, bales, or boxes). No density entry required.
- Keep fibers dry and clean: line boxes or gaylords with poly, stretch-wrap tightly, and add desiccants for humid routes. Request top-load for bagged product.
- Prepare for handling: band bales firmly with edge protection; mark if clamp handling is acceptable. For boxes, choose double-wall or 275# burst and cushion corners to avoid crush.
- Avoid contamination: book odor-free, swept trailers and do not co-load with liquids, spices, fertilizers, or chemicals. Ideal for textile mills and composite fiber processors.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 rating streamlines LTL quoting across carriers and reduces reclass risk for natural fiber commodities.
- Moisture and odor control cuts claims and preserves fiber quality, preventing downstream production rejects at mills.
- Clear labeling and package counts speed inspections and minimize invoice disputes, reweighs, and delays at cross-docks.
- Stable, well-banded bales or reinforced boxes improve cube utilization and handling efficiency, which can lower accessorial exposure.
