How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 168850 on the BOL and describe the product clearly: ammoniacal wood bark extract solution, ≥80% water, in drums. Attach an SDS even though it’s non-hazardous.
- Palletize tight-head drums upright with drum rings, absorbent mats, and two steel or poly bands per drum. Add corner boards and a full deck board to prevent chafing.
- Request Protect From Freezing in cold months; the high water content can crystallize below 32°F and cause bulging or leaks.
- Note ammonia odor sensitivity on tenders. Ask carriers to avoid co-loading with foodstuffs or scent-sensitive goods, and use “Do Not Stack” cones if lids could be stressed.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 55 means predictable LTL pricing and fewer reweigh/reclass disputes, lowering surprise fees.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and simplifies carrier acceptance, speeding tender approvals.
- Drum packaging streamlines cross-dock handling and reduces spill risk, cutting claims and downtime.
- Clear NMFC use on documents improves quote accuracy and helps secure capacity for time-critical mine or plant dosing schedules.
