How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the reagent is non-corrosive and matches NMFC 168855. Attach the SDS, list the proper UN/NA number and shipping name if applicable, and note Class 60 on the BOL.
- Use UN-rated drums or IBCs with tight, torqued closures and tamper seals. Example: four 55-gal drums on a 48x48 pallet with absorbent pads, banded and stretch-wrapped inside a spill berm.
- Control compatibility and temperature: segregate from oxidizers and food items, protect from heat if solvent-based, and ship IBCs with closed vented caps and locked valves. Avoid top-stacking.
- Tender with a HazMat-authorized LTL carrier, include a 24/7 emergency contact per 49 CFR 172.604, and request service options (appointment, liftgate) that prevent unsafe handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 60 eliminates density disputes, stabilizing LTL quotes and preventing surprise reclass charges for copper extractants.
- UN-compliant drums/IBCs and correct docs reduce spill claims, HazMat incident fees, and downtime at terminals.
- Clear NMFC pairing speeds carrier acceptance on mining and process-chem lanes, improving pickup reliability and transit.
- Standardized packing (full drum or IBC modules) streamlines consolidation and lowers handling touches, cutting total landed cost.
