How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Calculate density per packaged unit: weigh the package and divide by its cubic feet (L x W x H ÷ 1728). Include tops, liners, and hardware if shipped together to set the correct class.
  2. Palletize each receptacle on a sturdy, no-overhang pallet. Block and brace the base, add edge protectors, and use two or more steel or heavy poly bands; shrink wrap alone is not enough for concrete.
  3. Mark handling instructions: Do Not Stack, Heavy, Center Forks Here. Request liftgate or forklift service when delivering to jobsites, campuses, or property entrances.
  4. On the BOL, describe as Receptacles or Holders, waste, cast concrete, in packages; reference NMFC 168885, note density-based class, and list accessorials to avoid reclass or redelivery.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Density-based rating rewards solid concrete: high pcf often qualifies for lower classes (e.g., 50–70), cutting LTL spend on heavy shipments.
  • Accurate NMFC and BOL details reduce inspections, reclass fees, and surprise adjustments that inflate total landed cost.
  • Robust palletization and blocking minimize chipping and corner damage, lowering claim risk and replacement time on project schedules.
  • Pre-booked heavy-handling services (liftgate, limited access) prevent delays, detention, and second attempts—vital for municipal installs and property rollouts.
