How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the item fits the rule: perforated music records or rolls made of metal or paper, packed in boxes. If shipped on open spools or loose, rebox to maintain Class 150.
- Choose protective packaging: double‑wall corrugated cartons, end caps or core plugs for rolls, void fill with kraft paper, and moisture barrier wrap for metal to prevent corrosion.
- Palletize smartly: interlock cartons on a 4‑way pallet, add edge protectors, strap and wrap. Keep labels visible, mark This Side Up, and avoid stacking that crushes perforations.
- Document clearly on the BOL: “NMFC 168980, Class 150, Non‑Haz.” List piece count by boxes and request limited handling or Do Not Top Load for delicate media.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate Class 150 rating reduces reweighs, reclass fees, and post‑audit surprises, keeping LTL costs predictable.
- No density calculation needed—faster quotes across carriers and simpler rate shopping for time‑sensitive shipments.
- Proper boxing lowers damage risk to precision perforations, cutting claim rates and preserving playback quality for archives and restorers.
- Standardized packaging (boxes) improves carrier acceptance and transit reliability for libraries, museums, and player‑piano suppliers.
