How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 169000 and “Reel Heads, steel” at Class 70 on the BOL; include piece counts by diameter and the number of skids or crates.
- Nest heads by size with corrugated slips between flanges to prevent scuffing and burrs; add edge protectors and band firmly to a pallet.
- Keep center bores aligned and face all pieces the same direction; use stretch wrap to lock bundles so individual plates can’t slide.
- For small or thin-gauge runs, crate or box to avoid fork tine damage; mark pallets “Do Not Fork Through” and request no top-load if needed.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 eliminates density math, speeding quotes and preventing reclass disputes.
- Predictable rating for steel parts enables sharper LTL pricing and cleaner carrier negotiations.
- Clear identification (NMFC 169000) reduces accessorials tied to inspection delays or miscodes.
- Protective nesting and banding cuts edge-damage claims, lowering replacement costs and downtime.
