How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Drain and dry hose before packing; cap or bag couplings, then coil tightly on a reel or roll in layered bundles. Use polyester banding with edge protectors to prevent jacket damage.
- Palletize reels or rolled bundles on a sturdy 48x40 pallet. Add chocks or cribbing so coils cannot roll, then stretch-wrap and cross-strap to keep the center of gravity low.
- For two-wheeled carts, immobilize wheels, secure the handle to the frame, and strap the cart to a pallet. Box loose nozzles or adapters and strap that box to the skid.
- List on paperwork as “Firefighting Hose, with or without two-wheeled carts — NMFC 169090.” Provide piece counts, pallet dimensions, and note non-hazardous for faster LTL quotes.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate NMFC reference reduces reclass and reweigh disputes, helping stabilize freight rates and quote-to-invoice consistency.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines booking and avoids hazmat surcharges, lowering total shipping costs and admin workload.
- Palletized reels and immobilized carts cut handling risk, reducing claims on jacket abrasions, bent couplings, and damaged wheels.
- Tight coiling and smart strapping improve cube efficiency, allowing more hose per skid and better trailer utilization across LTL moves.
