How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm density for rating. Measure the packed cube and weight (e.g., 50 lb in 2.0 cu ft = 25 PCF) to determine the proper density-based class under Item 170.
  2. Secure moving parts. Lock and pad the automatic rewind mechanisms and protect discharge clamps or hose fittings to prevent damage in boxes or crates.
  3. Pick the right package type. Declare box, crate, Package 1184, or pallet/lift-truck skid, and use corner boards and stretch wrap when palletizing hose reels.
  4. Mark contents clearly. Use labels like “Grounding Cable Reel” or “Hose Reel Cassette,” note non-hazardous status, and include gross weight for fast carrier inspection.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Optimized freight spend via density-based classes—accurate PCF can reduce LTL rates for compact, heavier reels.
  • Lower claims and reclasses by packaging to spec (boxes, crates, Package 1184, or pallets) and immobilizing rewind mechanisms.
  • Streamlined tendering for non-hazardous items—fewer special handling steps and quicker pickup scheduling.
  • Consolidation flexibility: mix garden hose reels, industrial hose reels, and whip line reels on shared pallets to cut accessorials and improve cube utilization.
