How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify you’re shipping only empty tool rolls, fold them flat, and place in rigid boxes; separate by size or fabric to simplify counting.
- Select snug cartons with void fill to prevent crushing; for example, a 200# single-wall box can hold up to 20 canvas rolls without deformation.
- List NMFC 169810, Class 100 on the BOL; class is fixed, but include each box’s weight and dimensions for accurate LTL rating.
- Palletize boxes flat, strap and wrap securely; keep heavier cartons low and avoid pallet overhang to maintain stackability.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs: fixed Class 100 minimizes reclass fees and billing disputes.
- Faster quotes and tenders—no density calculations streamlines TMS setup and carrier responses.
- Lower claim risk: folded, boxed rolls resist abrasion and edge-crush, reducing returns.
- Simpler compliance: non-hazardous goods avoid hazmat surcharges and special documentation.
