How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Drain water- or sand-filled lawn rollers before pickup and list the dry or wet weight on the BOL; it prevents surprise reweighs and keeps handling safe.
- Mount the roller on a heavy skid and chock both sides of the drum; add blocking and chains/straps so the unit cannot rotate during LTL transit.
- Lift from the towing frame or designated lift points using a forklift with long forks or a spreader bar—avoid lifting from the drum surface to prevent damage.
- Provide exact overall length and drum diameter/width, and note the material (concrete, stone, iron, or steel) so carriers plan equipment and securement correctly.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 rating streamlines quoting and auditing—no density math, fewer reclass risks, and more predictable LTL freight costs.
- Non-hazardous designation reduces paperwork and accelerates tendering, helping contractors and municipalities move equipment between jobs faster.
- Proper skidding, blocking, and chocking cuts damage risk and claims, protecting the drum surface and saving on downtime and repair costs.
- Clear specs (dimensions, material, wet/dry weight) help carriers choose the right equipment, avoiding accessorials for special handling or redeliveries.
