How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Palletize packaged sheets with edges protected; add a rigid top and bottom sheet to prevent strap marks and corner crush during LTL handling.
- Seal against moisture: poly-wrap each package, use a pallet cover or shrink hood, and avoid overhang that can wick water during cross-docks.
- Declare NMFC 170145, Class 55, and describe as building paper or felt sheets, single or multiple ply, saturated or not, packaged—not coated or corrugated.
- Cap stack height around 40–48 inches and distribute weight evenly with slip sheets so dense bundles don’t deform and remain forklift-stable.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 55 rating helps secure lower LTL rates compared to higher-class building materials, improving landed cost on roofing supply shipments.
- Nonhazardous status broadens carrier choice and speeds tendering, reducing accessorial risk and enabling faster turnarounds on jobsite deliveries.
- Accurate NMFC use and package-ready bundles minimize reclass, reweigh, and OS&D claims, protecting margins and avoiding billing disputes.
- Uniform sheet bundles cube efficiently, allowing tighter trailer loading, fewer partials, and better consolidation across roofing or siding product lines.
